<p><strong>Stories of Inspiration from Western Australian Carers &#8211; 2008</strong></p>
<p>To give a voice to CaLD Carers and highlight what they encounter in a caring role, Ishar Multicultural Women&#8217;s Health Centre embarked on a special project for CaLD Carers funded by Carers WA. Four women from different cultural backgrounds shared their powerful stories of inspiration which were recorded on a DVD.</p>

<p><strong>Mobile Mural – 2000</strong></p>
<p>This was part of the Community Youth Safe Sex Program which was funded by Communicable Disease Control Branch of the Department of Health. The project involved the implementation of cultural appropriate sexual health education to at risk young women from CaLD backgrounds. The creation of the mural coupled with the increased knowledge and awareness from the education program gave the young women a sense of responsibility, each understanding they hold the key to safe sex.</p>
<p><strong>Multicultural Dolls – 1999</strong></p>
<p>This project culminated in a Dolls exhibition at the Mirrabooka Library. Aboriginal, Malaya, Egyptian and Jordanian women contributed to the creation of the dolls that were on display.</p>
<p><strong>The Multicultural Tapestry Quilt – 1999</strong></p>
<p>This project was funded by the Office of Citizenship and Multicultural Interests. The project honoured the uniqueness of Australians and their diverse backgrounds. A quilt was created by women from Aboriginal, Anglo–Australian, Baha’i, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, Russian Orthodox and Sahaj–Marg backgrounds.</p>

<p><strong>Healthy Active! A Resource Manual Promoting Best Practice in Physical Activity for Women from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Backgrounds – 2009</strong></p>
<p>A project funded by Department of Health and Ageing, the resource manual is one of the two components of the proejct. The manual is a user-friendly guide that will equip health professionals and agenices with the knowledge to effectively extend physical activity programs to CaLD women and assist them to integrate into the wider community. The manual also documents and promotes Ishar&#8217;s Healthy Active Bicultural Ambassadors training program and Multicultural Physical Activity program.</p>
<p><strong>Parenting Kit – 2007</strong></p>
<p>A project funded by Department for Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaCSIA) under the Stronger Families and Communities Strategy. The major outcome of the kit was the development of capabilities for parents to cope effectively with changes in culture, due to migration and to help them to support and understand the needs of their children in a multicultural environment. The kit was launched in December 2007.</p>
<p><strong>Volunteer Information Kit for Youth – 2001</strong></p>
<p>A project funded by the Health Department of WA, International Year of Volunteers, ‘Promoting spirit in the community’. The project aimed to develop &amp; implement a volunteer training program for the young women participants &amp; address the requirements &amp; responsibilities of a volunteer.</p>
<p><strong>Guidelines to Organising Health and Leisure Camp – 1997</strong></p>
<p>Conducted by Ishar and funded by Gordon Reid Foundation, Guidelines to Organising Health &amp; Leisure Camp was a camp that aimed to provide health and leisure activities that would equip the participants with knowledge, skills and attitudes to deal with life in a positive way. The program included workshops, outdoor activities, excursions and relaxation that allowed the women involved with the project carry the theme of positivity.</p>

<p><strong>Singing Out of Tune – 2007</strong></p>
<p>The production of this CD was under the Parenting from the Heart Project, a project funded by Department for Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaCSIA) under the Stronger Families and Communities Strategy.</p>
<p>Children with their parents practiced songs in their own language and created crafts which portrayed their songs. The children also made drawings for the CD cover, which were then put together by an artist. The CD was launched in December 2007.</p>
<p><strong>Music and Heritage CD – 2001 </strong></p>
<p>A project funded by The Office of Citizenship and Multicultural Interests. The project aimed to encourage participation and cooperation between women from CaLD backgrounds and to provide a venue to share their pride and the richness of their culture with each other and the community at large. Women from 12 different cultural backgrounds came together to produce a CD which contains 11 traditional songs, 3 of which are original. The HON Sheila M. McHale, Minister for Community Development launched the CD at a Community concert held on the 18th August 2001 at the Don Russell Performing Arts Centre.</p>

<p><strong>Article &#8216;Violence and Gender Inequality in Cross-Cultural Marriages&#8217; &#8211; 2009</strong></p>
<p>This article was written and presented by Ishar&#8217;s Multicultural Mental Health Carers Program Manager, Irena Quinn at the FECCA (Federation of Ethnic Communities&#8217; Councils of Australia) 2009 Biennial Conference held in Shepparton, Victoria. Based on the research finding “The Social Construction of Gender Inequality in Cross Cultural Marriages”, this article gives a brief insight and provides some understanding of the structural conditions, patterns and mechanisms associated with gender inequality and violent practices against migrant women in cross cultural marriages post migration.</p>

<p><strong>Book ‘Leaving Home’ – 2005</strong></p>
<p>A book that brings 10 refugee women from diverse backgrounds and countries to share their stories of survival.</p>
<p><strong>Book ‘Sangam’ – 2003</strong></p>
<p>Sangam is a book written by the former Director of Ishar, Shobhana Chakrabarti, sponsored by the State Government&#8217;s Office of Women’s Policy; a project from the Women’s Fellowship 2003 titled ‘Women and Intercultural Leadership’. Sangam means ‘the meeting point of different rivers coming from diverse sources’. In terms of culture, Sangam is about how people of different cultures come together and interact with each other.</p>
<p><strong>The Story of AUSTRALIA – 2002</strong></p>
<p>The Story of AUSTRALIA is a compilation of stories from children of a number of different cultural backgrounds. The book aims to benefit the wider community by providing an insight into the folklore of CaLD communities and understanding how we are all united in diversity.</p>
<p><strong>Key To Safe Sex – 2000</strong></p>
<p>A community youth project conducted by Ishar and funded by the Communicable Disease Control Branch, Public Health Division of the Health Department of Western Australia. Ishar organised a group of young women to produce a mural that would enable them to express their feelings on sexuality, safe sex, relationships, contraception and the consequences of sexual risk taking.</p>
<p><strong>The Multicultural Tapestry Booklet – 1999</strong></p>
<p>This booklet contains the entire story of the multicultural tapestry whose designs were created by women from Aboriginal, Anglo–Australian, Baha–i, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, Russian Orthodox and Sahaj–Marg backgrounds. By reading the booklet you are able to share in the understanding of the relevant cultures and the enthusiasm that the women showed in this unique creation.</p>
<p><strong>Book ‘The Multicultural Recipe’ – 1998</strong></p>
<p>A book produced in cooperation with clients, volunteers and Ishar staff. The sales of the recipe book assist Ishar to provide quality services to women from CaLD backgrounds.</p>
<p><strong>My Body My Health (Cervical Cancer Screening Project) – 1998</strong></p>
<p>The objective of this project was to raise awareness of the importance of Cervical Cancer among CaLD women and specifically targeted older women of all nationalities. It was funded by the Cervical Cancer Screening Program, Department of Health and ran for twelve months.</p>
<p><strong>Women’s Words – 1997</strong></p>
<p>A health needs assessment of women from non-English speaking backgrounds and recently arrived refugee and migrant women in the northern suburbs of Perth. Funded by the Department of Immigration &amp; Ethnic Affairs Migrant Access Project Scheme (MAPS).</p>
<p><strong>Cervical Cancer Screening Project – 1996</strong></p>
<p>A six month project coordinated by Ishar and funded by the Women’s Cancer Prevention Unit. The project aimed to increase the cervical cancer screening participation rates among women of CaLD backgrounds living in the central northern metropolitan area of Perth.</p>
<p><strong>A Better Life for Our Children – 1992</strong></p>
<p>The CaLD women who shared their stories of mothering in this booklet tell stories of great hardship, confusions and ultimately success as they struggled – with imperfect English – to make the huge adjustments from the world they knew to the alien world of Perth, Australia. Behind the courage and the tragedy lies the element which unites all mothers, regardless of their language, culture or skin colour – the strong desire to find a better life for their children.</p>

<p><strong>Getting Connected Banner – 2007</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">This banner was developed as part of the Getting Connected project – a project funded through the OMI Inclusion and Integration Grant Scheme. It aimed at engaging young newer arrival women aged 13 to 20 years in developing life skills, gaining confidence, broadening their network of influence and opening up their access to information and opportunities within the broader community. The project was conduced over the school holiday and had three components – psycho education, recreation and creative expression.</p>
